Artist Statement
The monarch butterfly represents the rights and liberty for all individuals to move freely. It is the symbol for the immigration rights movement, in representing the beauty of migration. Immigrants in the U.S are currently denied equal healthcare, fair wages, education opportunities, and access to equal protection under the law, despite their many positive contributions to communities across the country. Actions must be taken to ensure the well being of immigrants, and to support those who are seeking safety and better living conditions. In creating this art piece, I strived to emphasize the beauty of the monarch butterflies and what they represent. My hope is that my art will evoke a sense of compassion in my audience. I want to inspire others to become aware of the immigration rights movement and to gain an understanding of its importance. It’s critical to recognize the beauty and positive impacts of immigration in order to establish a society that values diversity and freedom. In this display, beneath the monarch butterflies there are various hands holding signs that represent protesters fighting for immigration rights. The hands covered in prints of monarch butterflies represent the power and beauty of protesting for equality, and the importance of protesting to achieve social change. Opinion EditorialAlong with my art project, I wrote an Opinion editorial about the immigration rights movement.
